ARM Senior Consultant

As Senior Consultant to Advanced Rail Management and principal of Joe Kalousek Consulting Ltd., Dr. Kalousek has more than 30 years of experience relating to research, design and application of wheel/rail systems on rail freight and transit systems around the world. Dr. Kalousek specializes in wheel/rail systems, including profile designs, rail grinding methods, failure analysis and fracture mechanics, wheel/rail adhesion and friction management.

Dr. Kalousek has served as Senior Consultant to ARM on various rail grinding projects in North America. He has designed rail (and wheel) profiles, assessed rail (and wheel) surface conditions, reviewed grinding strategies, analyzed wear patterns and provided recommendations for subsequent rail grinding and maintenance programs. He has provided such consulting services on projects in Boston, Edmonton, Los Angeles, San Diego and Detroit.

National Research Council, Centre for Surface Transportation Technology
Prior to starting his consulting career, Dr. Kalousek was Principle Research officer for the National Research Council of Canada's Centre for Surface Transportation Technology. Over a period of 25 years, Dr. Kalousek worked on wheel/rail and rail grinding-related projects on passenger and transit systems in Vancouver, Calgary, Sacramento, Dallas, Ankara, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Sydney.

Dr. Kalousek also worked on wheel/rail and rail grinding- related projects on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and Network Rail's passenger system in the UK. He also devised rail profiles and rail grinding strategies for North American freight railways including Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, BC Rail, Quebec Cartier Mining, Illinois Central, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He also designed rail grinding programs for MRS and Carajas (Brazil), GHP Iron Ore (Australia) and South African Railway.

Dr. Kalousek's rail profile designs and the development of groundbreaking preventive rail grinding strategies have been adopted by rail freight, passenger and transit systems around the world. Dr. Kalousek is also a leading expert on wear and fatigue mechanisms in wheel/rail systems, and the development of lubrication and friction management systems. He is a patent holder in the development of High Positive Friction (HPF) and Low Coefficient of Friction (LCF) friction modifiers and Adhesion Enhancement Agent (AEA) friction modifiers.

Dr. Kalousek also developed the pre-profiled JK rail sections that are in use on many North American railways. His work on Contact Mechanics, Friction Management, Metallurgy, Wheel/Rail Failure Analysis and Fracture Mechanics, and Railway Track and Vehicle Design and Maintenance have been published extensively in technical journals around the world.
