ARM CONSULTANT BIOGRAPHY
Jim Hornaday
Senior Consultant

James Hornaday is President of Alpha Gamma Transform (AGT), a consulting firm that specializes in custom materials testing and failure analysis for the railroad and automotive industries. Founded 15 years ago, AGT has provided railroad industry customers specific answers to their questions of whether procured materials were suitable for intended use and why certain materials did not perform in service as expected.
Mr. Hornaday has 54 years experience working in the railway and automotive industries.
Mr. Hornaday worked 28 years in the automotive industry. A large part of that work involved study of the reactions of engineering materials to forces and stresses higher than their yield strengths. This understanding has been quite helpful in interpreting rail – wheel degradation reactions. Rails and wheels are intentionally and continually overloaded in heavy haul operation – and are expected to survive for as long as possible.
Mr. Hornaday began his railway career as Senior Research Metallurgist for Canadian National Railway, and has worked for the Burlington Northern as Chief Metallurgist. In those capacities, Mr. Hornaday helped both railroads’ Engineering and Mechanical Departments in specification of procured materials, quality assurance testing of materials, development of track welding procedures, and analysis of submitted service failed parts.
Mr. Hornaday holds BS and MS Degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from Purdue University. He is a member of the American Society for Metals, the American Welding Society, having served on its Committee D15C (rail and track-work welding), and is active member of the American Railway Engineers & Maintenance of Way Association, serving on Committee 4 (Rail), and more specifically as chairman of subcommittee 6 (Joint Bars).
Some of the projects Mr Hornaday has worked on for ARM include:
• Preparation of a schematic layout sketch for processsing and test equipment necessary for rehabilitation of string rail, together with off-line head hardening of the rehabilitated rail strings.
• Development of a rational basis for replacement of rail in track for fatigue cracks, based on Class 1 RR practice.
• Determination of cause for accelerated rail breakage on the New York City Transit Authority
• Analysis of ARM generated rail profile data collected on the UP Rawlins Sub., track 2 to determine the cause of detail fractures in the track's tangent rails
• Development of a U. of Manitoba computer program that will calculate the peak on any AMR measured head profile file
• Consulting advice concerning rail condition, wheel condition, grinding results on Caltrain commuter and San Diego Trolley commuter lines
• Prepare & conduct a two day transit welding training course for Edmonton Transit maintenance workers.
