ARM to Head Rail Management Program for Edmonton Transit
Edmonton Transit announced that Advanced Rail Management has been chosen to manage and oversee rail grinding and maintenance operations on the rail transit system.
Indialantic, Florida – November, 2009
Edmonton Transit (ETS) has awarded Advanced Rail Management Corporation (ARM) the contract to manage rail grinding operations on its 20.3 km route. ARM’s responsibilities include execution of pre-grind inspection and analysis, development of an optimized grinding plan, execution of the plan, management and oversight of all contracted operations, and analysis of post-grind track conditions.
The annual contract, for the first time, specifies that the rail grinding equipment used must be able to measure and record targeted vs. actual rail profile as well as corrugation depth and wavelength in real time. This new specification is compelling evidence of Edmonton Transit’s commitment to use of state-of-the-art technology to maintain its rail.
"The ETS contract represents what we see as an industry-wide shift toward a new level of accountability on the part of the grinding contractor," said ARM President Gordon Bachinsky. "Customers want to see real, measurable results and cost savings – that’s the bottom line." Since 1990, ARM has been working closely with the ETS to monitor and maintain track quality on the line.
"ARM has been involved in our rail grinding program since it began in 1990. They designed the optimized rail profiles for the system and continue to maintain those profiles today," said Jim Stein, Sr. LRT Facilities & Right-of-Way Engineering Supervisor. "ARM’s use of the Speno grinder has given them the ability to grind through signal equipment without us having to remove it. This improvement in equipment design has saved us considerable time and expense."
The SRR 16M-4 is different from other grinders in use on North American track. The on-board optical rail measurement system gives the operator real-time monitoring of the work allowing for precise control of the grinder. The result is increased operating efficiency, productivity, and cost savings. The SRR 16M-4 grinder is able to grind through very sharp curves, and transition seamlessly from open track to road crossings to turnouts, all in a single pass.
"The Speno SRR 16M-4 grinder is perfectly suited to the demanding specifications of the Edmonton contract. Speno grinders are known around the world for quality and reliability, and we are very proud to have exclusive access to Speno equipment and expertise. ARM’s use of the on-board profile and corrugation measurement system in Edmonton is another ‘first’ for a transit property in North America," said Bachinsky.
About Edmonton Transit
Beginning service in 1908 with a modest fleet of 4 streetcars, the Edmonton Radial Railway Service was established to meet the growing transportation demands of Edmonton's nearly 19,000 people. Now, over 100 years later, ETS provides service to more than 750,000 citizens in a 700 sq. km area. 2008 statistics show annual ridership on the popular system to be more than 66,000,000. With 14.7 km of track presently in service and 5.6 km being constructed, Edmonton Transit is committed to regular monitoring of track conditions, and preventive maintenance, on the 20.3 km system.
